Technical story 08 · Inauguration and launch

The run order says the Minister touches the plate at 11:20. At 11:19 the countdown is at four. At 11:19 and thirty seconds the Minister is still in the corridor, shaking hands. Somewhere a video file is about to hit zero on an empty stage, and the walls will go to black while two hundred people watch.

We have built launches so that this cannot happen, and it is the reason the inauguration and launch page talks about show control before it talks about fireworks.

The design. Every output in the room listens to one trigger. The countdown is a state machine tied to the live cue, not a video with a play button. The operator has a manual fallback under one hand.

The need behind the reveal

Clients ask for a countdown, a reveal and a film. The need is that the one minute lands no matter what the day does: a late arrival, a speech that runs long, a power dip, a file that will not play. The ceremony is not the content. The ceremony is the reliability of the content.

One trigger, five outputs

The guest of honour’s action, a touch plate, a handprint, a key, a gesture, is the only input. The show engine receives it and fires every output in sequence: LED walls, lighting cue, audio, the physical reveal mechanism, and a signal to the capture cameras. All of it within a tenth of a second. Nobody at the venue’s lighting desk has to react to anything; the cue arrives from the engine.

A countdown that can wait

Our countdowns are built with three states. Running, where the numbers fall. Hold, a designed state the countdown parks in if the cue has not arrived by a set number, usually three. Compress, where a countdown that started late catches up without a visible jump. The room sees a branded moment that breathes, not a stalled video.

The film is built for the wall and the room

For Saudi Global Port’s Jubail Commercial Port inauguration the film was made for a large screen in a room, not a phone: pacing slower than a social cut, contrast set for an LED wall, audio mixed for the venue system, and Saudi Vision 2030 underneath the story rather than on top of it. It was finished on the actual wall at rehearsal, because a grade approved on a laptop is a guess until the wall shows it.

Rehearsal is the product

We run the full ceremony on site, usually twice, with a stand-in on the trigger and the venue’s lighting and audio teams at their desks. We rehearse the late cue, the early cue, and the manual fallback. We rehearse a playback failure by pulling the primary and letting the backup take over. A launch that has not failed in rehearsal has not been rehearsed.

Fallbacks you never see

  • Backup playback running in parallel, frame-aligned, switched by one key.
  • Manual trigger at the operator console if the plate, key or gesture fails.
  • Power contingency on the show engine and playback, coordinated with the venue.
  • Ambient state the walls return to if anything stalls, so the room never sees black.

Where it fits

Questions clients ask

What if the guest of honour is late?

The countdown holds in a designed state and the run order adjusts. Late and early cues are rehearsed before the event, so the operator has done it already.

Can you work with the venue’s AV team?

Yes. We coordinate cue outputs with their lighting and audio, and we bring our own show control so the reveal never depends on their playback.

Does the show engine need internet?

No. Everything is local. Nothing in the reveal depends on a connection.

How long does a launch film take?

Three to five weeks from approval. The reveal mechanism and show control are scoped alongside it with a real timeline at the brief.
